The message of the campaign:
"A train cannot choose its route. YOU CAN!"
The first railway safety week in Estonia was held in the year 2005. This year we organize this event for the third time already. RON lasts from April 23 through May 1.
RON’s objective is informing the general public about the dangers present on railway and reduce the number of railway accidents through improving awareness, as well as notifying people about the possibilities for preventing railway accidents.
RON involves different interest groups in organizing joint events and activities. This includes the cooperation partners who have the opportunity to introduce their activities in the respective area.
This year we are focusing on pedestrians as the most endangered target group. The fact that only every third person hit by train survives, indicates clearly that this is a major source of danger.
Pedestrians are persons involved in traffic whose movement is not restricted by any technical tools or machinery. Meanwhile, people themselves are free to decide where to go and what to do. Everybody has so many things to choose between that railway as a place for spending free time could be definitely crossed out from the list because this is not a place to hang around – this is a place where trains move.
This bring us to the main message of the campaign. A train cannot choose its route. YOU CAN!

Golden Level Crossing Gates
The Golden Level Crossing Gates is an award for expressing gratitude founded by Operation Lifesaver Estonia in 2006. Every year this award is given to legal or private persons who have been supporting railway safety work during the previous period and whose daily job is not related with railway and/or railway safety.
"Golden Level Crossing Gates 2006" was presented to Mayor of Tallinn Mr. Jüri Ratas

During the event the Golden Level Crossing Gates 2007 award will be presented to a person who has helped in spreading the railway safety message. The award will be presented by Jüri Ratas, the owner of the 2006 award.

How a pedestrian could avoid railway accidents?
• You can cross railway only at a designated location.
• You must be convinced that it is safe to cross the railway each time before crossing it.
• If you can hear sound signal, see flashing red lights or closed gates at the level crossing then it means that a train is coming.
• It is not allowed to climb under or across trains.
• Running across railway at the last minute is dangerous.
• Follow commercials and listen to good advice!
